Are we nearing the end of full time employment?
True, over half the workforce will be independent freelancers in the next 5 years.
Also true that top talent will choose to freelance rather than climb the corporate ladder.
BUT full time employment isn’t dead, it’s entering a new era of autonomy and fulfillment.
What Will Change In the Next 5 Years?
Generalist employees will triumph, take on more responsibility, and deliver needle-moving results. Think of your future leaders like mini-CEO’s. They own strategy, and have budgets of $50-500k to tap into freelancer specialists like SEO experts, presentation designers, copywriters, etc.
Collaboration will work best virtual-first.
Companies will be 80/20 - 80% freelancers, 20% full time. Most tech companies are already over half contractors. Your company probably is too.
Freelance projects will replace interviews. Why spend up to 6 months talking when you can get in the trenches for 3 weeks?
What Should You Do?
Give your full time employees autonomy, NOT a checklist of job requirements.
Give your employees budget to hire freelancers. Start with $2k to hire their first freelancer. Recommend a small, risk free task like designing an internal leadership presentation.
Hold them accountable to outcomes, NOT inputs. For example instead of tasks or activities, focus on the results of those tasks. Did they ship a new feature? Or increase support article output by 30%?
Drown them in responsibility.
