How The WorkGenius Acquisition of JBC Is A Greater Freelancing and Full Time Hybrid Trend

The world won't be 100% freelance or 100% full time. Instead, it'll be a hybrid mix where top talent navigates between freelancing, full time, and side hustling.

Leaders, just like we won’t be replaced by robots (better said, we’ll adjust to robots), we won’t be replaced by freelancers.

Yes…

  • Freelancers will become the majority of the workforce in the next 5 years

  • 60% of executives say they will substantially replace full time employees with independent workers in the next 3 years according to Mercer.

BUT let’s get real - full time employment will still have a place, and WorkGenius just put their money where their mouth is in this belief.

According to CEO of WorkGenius Marlon Rosenzweig,

  • “Not only has staffing been transformed by the freelance movement, it’s also created new career possibilities that we want to support. Nowadays, a top freelance engineer in the US, Europe or Asia might leave freelancing to join a company full-time for a great project, then go back to freelancing or perhaps work as an interim CTO. Talented professionals have more options than ever before, and we are uniquely able now to support them more fully throughout their career.”

What’s the Big Deal?

Like any hype, the new thing is sexier than the old. And in this case…work is an easy target.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Work will still look about 63% the same (I’m writing this in the afternoon). Honestly…the real tangible difference between freelancing and working remote full time will just be the frequency of contract renewals (which honestly is pretty good depending on the person).

The impact is that the world will come down to outcomes.

  • This means that…

  • For individuals… what did you deliver? What was the impact? How much did it cost? How long did it take? This will be the new resume.

    • As entrepreneurs, this is our life.

  • For leaders…what outcomes do you think you need to deliver? How will you test that as cheaply and quickly as possible? If it works, how do you scale? This will be the new leadership lesson.

How can you be ready?

Simply put, you need to plan for a seamless integration of freelancers and full time employees.

  • If an individual, this means navigating freelance and full-time opportunities smoothly.

Dip Your Toes Into Freelancing Without Quitting Your Day Job
Tactically speaking… How do you start freelancing? How do you know if you’re the right fit to freelance? How do you dip your toe into freelancing without quitting or affecting your day job? In todays economy you need a freelance muscle. A couple major reasons…

  • If a leader, this means building a freelancer bench (having a couple of go-to individuals for every skill) and seamlessly integrating freelancers within existing working teams.

    • This one’s harder and we’ll save for a different post.

Freelancer Checklist: What Clients Need To Work With You ASAP
Freelancers - below is a quick checklist of requirements we constantly run into. Per each checkbox we added notes and potential tech to leverage. Honestly for most checkboxes you’ll find cheap (usually free) solutions. What we learned at Venture L is that the tech really doesn’t matter, it’s your application and customization based off the below requirements that really moves the needle. And honestly, in most circumstances, Google Workspace, Calendly, and PandaDoc is more than enough…
