On one side, Upwork wants to look like every other company, Pepsi/Coke/Nike etc suspending operations
On the other, this goes against the whole promise of freelancing to democratize opportunity by removing the dependence of an intermediary (what used to be companies, agencies, staffing firms) and location to make a living.
Itβs also extremely counterintuitive. If their intention is to hurt the state, this only strengthens the state since individuals in Russia now have less opportunity for independence.
